Briefly explained

Calculate the start-up grant amount

The amount you receive depends on the duration and how much unemployment benefit 1 you can receive. You can find out exactly how this works and what else you need to pay attention to in the following section.

Connection between unemployment benefit and start-up subsidy

How is it all connected, you ask? At first glance, it actually seems more complex than it actually is.

Once granted, the monthly start-up subsidy is the same amount as the unemployment benefit 1 you have received to date, plus an additional €300 in the form of the so-called social insurance subsidy (SV), both together initially for a period of six months. You also have the option of continuing to receive the social insurance subsidy for a further 9 months.

    Brief explanation

    Amount of the grant explained

The start-up subsidy is made up of six monthly payments in the amount of the unemployment benefit received up to that point and a €300 social insurance subsidy.

This means that every self-employed person must take out private or statutory health insurance and the current minimum rate of statutory health insurance is around €300.

The period during which you can receive the start-up subsidy and the social insurance at the same time is six months. At the end of the six months, you have the option of applying for a follow-up application to extend the social security subsidy by a further nine months.

If the start-up grant is intended to ensure that you are not yet able to support yourself completely from the profits you make, especially at the beginning of your self-employment, the conditions for the follow-up application are slightly different: this is only granted if the self-employment covers your own living expenses as far as possible. The benefits are used to subsidize your own social expenses for a further 9 months. Therefore, in order for the follow-up application to be approved successfully, the situation should be such that you do not earn too much, but also not too little after 6 months of self-employment. Experience has shown that the previous ALG 1 serves as a guide here.

Interesting at this point: So what is the maximum amount you can receive in the form of the start-up grant and social security allowance over 15 months?

As a rule, the start-up grant for most founders is between €10,000 and €15,000.

    Phase 1 and 2:

    Calculation example

If both the first application for the start-up subsidy and the subsequent application for the continuation of the social insurance subsidy are granted, our two sample founders would receive the following amounts:
    Start-up grant calculation Marie Tim
    Gross salary (monthly) 3.500 € 5.000 €
    Old/new federal states old new
    Income tax class I II
    Children Yes No
    ALG1 entitlement 1.515 € 1.885 €
    1st phase: 6 months 1,515 € + 300 € = 1,815 € per month 1,885 € + 300 € = 2,185 € per month
    2nd phase: 9 months 300 € per month 300 € per month
    Total amount of start-up grant 13.590 € 15.810 €

As a rule, the start-up subsidy for most founders is between €10,000 and €15,000, depending on the last gross salary and whether the follow-up application for a continuation of the social security subsidy is approved. In principle, this provides a good financial foundation for a somewhat carefree start to self-employment, which you should definitely take with you.
